Bangalore Metro (Namma Metro): Route, Stations, Fare, Timings, Map & Expansion

Bangalore Metro, known as Namma Metro, is the rapid transit system of Bengaluru. It is built and operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka. Three lines are in service today: the Purple Line, the Green Line and the Yellow Line.

Namma Metro opened its first section on 20 October 2011 and has grown to about 96 km with 83 stations. The newest line, the Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronics City, opened in August 2025.

This guide covers Bangalore Metro lines, routes, stations, fares, timings, history, interchanges, interesting facts and expansion plans.

Bangalore Metro Overview

Namma Metro connects Bengaluru's east and west through the Purple Line, its north and south through the Green Line, and the south-east tech corridor through the Yellow Line. It helps passengers travel between residential areas, offices, the city centre, bus and railway hubs, and IT districts such as Whitefield and Electronic City.

The network has a mix of elevated, underground and at-grade stations. As of August 2025, 74 of its 83 stations were elevated, eight were underground and one was at grade. Trains have six coaches.

History of Namma Metro

Namma Metro was planned to ease Bengaluru's growing traffic. Construction began in 2008, and the system has since expanded in several phases, with more lines under construction.

2008: Construction began

The project received formal approval and construction started in 2008, with both lines of Phase 1 including underground sections through the city centre.

2011: Namma Metro began operations

The first section of the Purple Line opened on 20 October 2011, making Bengaluru the fifth Indian city to run a metro rail system.

2014 to 2016: The Green Line and the full Purple Line

The first section of the Green Line opened on 1 March 2014. The entire Phase 1 stretch of the Purple Line was opened on 29 April 2016.

Phase 2: Extensions east, west and north

Later extensions took the Purple Line to Whitefield (Kadugodi) in the east and Challaghatta in the west, and the Green Line to Madavara in the north and Silk Institute in the south.

2025: The Yellow Line opened

The 19.15 km Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra was inaugurated on 10 August 2025 and opened to passengers the next day. Soon after, the metro crossed one million boardings in a single day for the first time.

2026: Pink and Blue lines on the way

The elevated section of the Pink Line is nearing opening, while the underground section and the Blue Line are still under construction.

Bangalore Metro Lines and Routes

Namma Metro lines are identified by colour. Three lines are operational. The following table gives an overview of the network; check BMRCL for current endpoints and operational status.

Bangalore Metro Stations

Namma Metro has 83 operational stations. Below are the Yellow Line in full and the key stations on the Purple and Green lines. Interchange stations are highlighted.

How to find the right metro station

Identify your destination, find the nearest station and check which line serves it. If your journey crosses lines, change at Majestic (Purple and Green) or RV Road (Green and Yellow). For large destinations such as railway stations, check the station exits to minimise walking.

Bangalore Metro Fare

Bangalore Metro fares depend on the distance travelled and start at ₹10. Tokens, smart cards and other digital options are available.

BMRCL revised its fares upwards in 2025, so older fare charts may be out of date. To see the exact fare between any two stations, use the Bangalore Metro fare calculator or open the fare page.

Check the latest fare information with BMRCL before travelling. Fare schedules, discounts and payment options can change.

Bangalore Metro Timings

Namma Metro services generally begin early in the morning and run until late in the evening. Timings differ slightly by line, direction and day of the week. For example, the Yellow Line starts later on Sundays, and BMRCL sometimes runs later trains on special days.

Train frequency also varies by line and time of day, and the newer Yellow Line has had its frequency improved as more trains were added. Passengers travelling early or late should confirm the timetable for their starting station and direction.

Bangalore Metro Interchange Stations

Interchange stations let passengers change between lines. Two interchanges are currently operational.

Operational interchange stations
Station Connecting lines
Majestic (Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station) PurpleGreen
Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road (RV Road) GreenYellow

More interchanges are planned as the Pink and Blue lines open, including with the Yellow Line at Jayadeva Hospital and Central Silk Board and with the Purple Line at MG Road and Krishnarajapura.

Connectivity Across Bangalore

Majestic is the heart of the network. It brings the Purple and Green lines together in the city centre, close to the city's main bus and railway hubs.

Namma Metro serves many of the places people travel to most often:

  • IT hubs: Whitefield on the Purple Line and Electronic City on the Yellow Line.
  • City centre: MG Road, Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha and Majestic.
  • Rail and bus: City Railway Station and Majestic.
  • Residential areas: Indiranagar, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Yeshwanthpur and Kengeri.

The airport is not yet connected by metro. The Blue Line, which will serve the airport, is under construction.

Interesting Facts About Bangalore Metro

  • Started in 2011: Namma Metro's first section opened on 20 October 2011.
  • First in South India: The Purple Line's Phase 1 was the first underground metro section built in South India.
  • Mostly elevated: Out of 83 operational stations, 74 are elevated, eight are underground and one is at grade.
  • One million rides a day: After the Yellow Line opened in August 2025, the metro crossed one million boardings in a single day for the first time.
  • Newer signalling: The Pink, Yellow and Blue lines use CBTC signalling, unlike the first two lines.

How Namma Metro supports urban travel

Namma Metro gives commuters a public transport option that avoids road congestion. Its lines connect offices, universities, markets, residential neighbourhoods and the city centre, which helps passengers plan journeys across Bengaluru more easily.
